Beth Genne
Ms. Genné specializes in the history of twentieth century British ballet, dance in the American Musical Film and in the connections between dance, art and music. Prior to coming to U-M, she taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her book, The Making of a Choreographer: Ninette de Valois and Bar aux Folies-Bergère, includes an annotated facsimile of Dame Ninette's unique choreographic notebook for a ballet based on Manet's painting.
Ms. Genné's study of the artistic relationship of choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton and designer Sophie Fedorovitch appeared in the book Following Sir Fred's Steps: The Ashton Legacy, and a chapter on Margot Fonteyn is forthcoming in the book The Fonteyn Phenomenon. She has also published articles on Berthe Morisot's Self Portraits, Picasso and Ballet, Gene Kelly, Vincente Minnelli and numerous other articles, essays, criticism and reviews in American and British journals.
Ms. Genné is a member of the Editorial Board of the Society of Dance History Scholars, has held appointments as Visiting Senior Research Fellow at Roehampton Institute's Department of Dance Studies in London, England and principal researcher for the George Balanchine Foundation's project, "Popular Balanchine," for which she will be directing research on Balanchine's work in Hollywood.
Ms. Genné has been the recipient of awards and fellowships and, in 1991, she received the University of Michigan Learning Disability Society Award of Recognition for the teaching of disabled students.
Professor Genné has done extensive post-doctoral work in the history of dance. Her courses include European and American late nineteenth and twentieth century dance history, World dance, Collaboration in Art, Film and Dance, Arts and Ideas in the Nineteenth Century and the World Performance Center Graduate Studies Seminar.
