Darrell F. Winn is undergraduate advisor for Design and Technical Production. A member of the department for 25 years, he began his career in the Pentagon as a motion picture producer/director and administrative head of the Department of the Army Special Photographic Office. Handling his office's quick-reaction photography, Winn traveled the world filming a wide range of subjects. Between assignments, he directed the filming of governmental training films. Winn joined the faculty at California State University Fullerton in the early 1970s, teaching and also designing lighting and scenery for the department. During the same period, he was resident scenic and lighting designer for the Fullerton Civic Light Opera. At UC Davis, Winn holds a split faculty/staff appointment. He is the department's production manager, and teaches technical theatre, lighting design and production management. Winn continues to work outside the university as a scenic and lighting designer and a theatre consultant. To date, he has had over 100 lighting designs and 56 scenic designs produced. He designed the theatre for Garbeau's Dinner Theatre and was a resident scenic designer there. His consulting clients include the Woodland Opera House, the Boy Scouts of America, Washington Unified School District, Davis Joint Unified School District and the City of Davis. He was a member of the advisory committee for the Mondavi Center for Performing Arts and from the beginning actively participated in its design. He is a strong advocate of safety for theatrical performers, technicians and audiences, and for the past decade has served the US Institute for Theatre Technology as a vice-commissioner for Health and Safety. Winn holds an MA in Theatre Arts from San Francisco State University.
