Joseph Mills, Ed.D. Joined the faculty in 2001. Associate Professor of Dance and Director of the Dance Program Joseph Mills discovered dance through the visual arts and a passionate curiosity for gymnastics. His BFA degree in fine arts with an emphasis in sculpture and drawing is from Southern Illinois University, where he began study in dance with Alcine Wiltz. He performed and choreographed with the Mid America Dance Company in St. Louis, and began teaching for MADCO in 1984. In 1987, he joined MOMIX Dance Theater, where he toured extensively throughout the U.S., South America, Europe and Asia. Professor Mills toured and performed his own choreography throughout Italy in addition to professional engagements with other companies. He worked with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company from 1990-94, and from the Fall of 1995 through December of 2000, he was a full-time faculty member of the Department of Theatre & Dance at George Washington University. He received his Ed.D. from Temple University in 1998, completing his dissertation, The Fungus Among Us: Considering Pilobolus Dance Theatre From Multiple Perspectives. Mills joined the faculty of the Dance Program at Northwestern in 2001, and has been very active as a guest artist, choreographing and performing in Norway, Brazil, St. Louis, and Washington D.C. Mills/works, an evening of work by and for Mills, was presented at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. in 2003, and he is a frequent guest artist with The Erick Hawkins Dance Company in New York. Reflections in the Well of Solace, was commissioned and presented by the Mid America Dance Company in St. Louis, Missouri and is now a part of their active repertoire.
