Rebecca Lazier
Rebecca Lazier is a Brooklyn based dancer, choreographer and teacher. She grew up in Nova Scotia, trained at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and later moved to NYC, where she graduated from The Juilliard School.
Lazier has been on the faculties of UCLA, Trinity College, Wesleyan University, Muhlenberg College, Hartford Ballet/University of Hartford and was the first foreigner to be the artist-in-residence for a year at Mimar Sinan Conservatory in Istanbul, Turkey. She has been a guest artist at DanceSpace, Union Street Dance, Columbia College, Canadian Children's Dance Theatre, ACDFA Festivals, Dance Nova Scotia, Interlochen Arts Academy, Lincoln Center Institute and CalArts.
Rebecca is the artistic director of TERRAIN, a seven member dance company founded in 2001. TERRAIN has performed in New York at Movement Research at the Judson Church, The Kitchen, 92nd St. Y, Joyce SoHo, BAX, WAX, Dixon Place, and Surf Reality. They have toured to Mobius (Boston), Highways Performance Space (CA), Sushi Performance and Visual Art (CA), Interlochen Arts Academy (MI), Nova Scotia, and performed in many independent dance venues in New England. Lazier has been awarded residencies at The Yard, a colony for performing artists, and at Djerassi where she was named the 2001 Djerassi Resident Artist Program Honorary Fellow, supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is the current recipient of a Brooklyn Arts Exchange Space Grant for 2004 and recently completed a new work supported by a space grant from the 92nd St Y, Harkness Dance Center. Rebecca has received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, USIS and Anakultur and been commissioned to create work for the Scotia Festival of Music, Columbia College, Westport Arts Center, Trinity College, Hartford Camerata Conservatory, and Springfield Arts Festival. TERRAIN is the resident dance company at the White Mountain Summer Dance Festival at Springfield College.
Lazier has collaborated with nationally renown director Bartlett Sher in theatre productions which have been seen at Hartford Stage, Portland Stage Company and Trinity College. Her duet, Contusion, is featured in the documentary, See Dance, produced by WBGY, a PBS affiliate in Springfield, MA. In addition to theatrical settings, Lazier has performed in locations as varied as the home of Diaghilev's birth in Perm, Russia, under risers at the dance building at UCLA, and in remote villages in eastern Turkey.
Current projects include choreographing and directing Journey Beyond the West: The New Adventures of Monkey, a serial fantasy action-adventure music/theater epic conceived and composed by Fred Ho, to be performed at the Guggenheim Museum in December 2003. TERRAIN will present new choreography at the Brooklyn, Arts Exchange on February 6 and 7, 2004.RebeccaLazier Gifts
