Robert Kaplan
Robert Kaplan is a composer and pianist who has been working primarily in dance since 1976. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Hartt School of Music, a Master of Music in Composition from Arizona State University, and studied the Alexander Technique with Eileen Crow in New York City from 1980-85. He has served on the faculties of Sarah Lawrence College, City College of New York, Arizona State University, at numerous National Choreography Conferences, Regional Ballet Festivals, the International Ballet Teacher's Conference in Vail, CO, the Bates Dance Festival and the American Dance Festival. Over sixty of his scores for choreography have been performed throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Mexico by such artists as Mel Wong (30 scores for Mel Wong), Ze'eva Cohen, Sarah Stackhouse, Senta Driver, Elina Mooney, Ann Ludwig, Susan Marshall and Douglas Nielsen. He tours extensively as a pianist and teacher at dance festivals and presents a variety of workshops exploring sound, rhythm and movement. Kaplan is a founding member and past President of the International Guild of Musicians in Dance and has been the recipient of numerous Meet-the-Composer grants as well as University grants. He is currently a Professor and the Music Director in the Department of Dance at Arizona State University and his book and CD-ROM, "An Interactive Guide to Music for Dancers," is published through Human Kinetics, Inc. www.sounddance.net/sdarts.html
