Sheila Humphreys began her training in London, England with Miss Kathaleen Crofton (a member of the Anna Pavlova Company), then with Mme. Cleo Nordi; she then entered the Royal Ballet School of England. In 1958 she joined the Royal Ballet Company as a member of the Corps de Ballet where she became a Soloist and then Ballet Mistress; she created the role of the Governess in Kenneth MacMillan’s The Invitation; and for the American choreographer, Joe Layton, in his Grand Tour she created the role of Theda Bara. Ms. Humphreys’ career includes many diverse aspects of the ballet world: she has worked with choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton and with American jazz choreographer Matt Maddox; she has served as reshearsal director for John Cranko’s Pineapple Poll for the Norwegian Ballet and performed in films. After a stint with the Scottish Ballet (as Character Principal and Ballet Mistress), she came to the United States in 1984 as Assistant Ballet Mistress for Ballet Metropolitan (Columbus, Ohio). In 1986 she was invited by Robert Joffrey to be Ballet Mistress for his company; and in 1990 she became associated with the Sacremento Ballet as Character Principal and guest teacher. Ms. Humphreys has been with Florida State University since 1997.
