Description
Tek Winesberry
Tek Winesberry is a versatile piano accompanist for the Department of Dance at The University of Iowa. His many styles of playing the piano have allowed him to play for both ballet and modern dance technique classes throughout the years. One of the styles tek_winesberryof which he has explored on his own and incorporates within the classes for which he plays is the art of piano improvisation, an art that is not as practiced nor taught as prevalently as compared to the era of yesteryear.
Tek has played for such distinguished dancers and artists such as Fernando Bujones, Basil Thompson, Francoise Martinet, Alicia Brown, Linda Crist, Jeffery Bullock, Alan Sener, Armando Duarte, Charlotte Adams, and Peggy Baker. In addition, he is a composer who has a particularly keen interest in rediscovering and transforming Native American music into the piano idiom. Last year, Mr. Winesberry was invited by the Department of Interior of the United States to perform his own works in an all Native American program for the Washita Symposium of 2001. As a University of Iowa student and candidate for the Doctoral of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance, he is also a concert pianist who concertizes throughout his local area and the nation. His piano teachers and mentors include international artists, James E. Miltenberger, Uriel Tsachor, Menahem Pressler, and Constance Keene.
Currently, Mr. Winesberry is working on his doctoral thesis in which he will transcribe the last two movements of the orchestral score, Symphony no. 2 in E minor by Sergei Rachmaninoff to piano solo. Moreover, he is in the process of nearly completing a 3-4 set compact disc program of various genres of piano music to be released later in the year. Such genres will include classical music within the standard classical piano literature, original compositions that are inspired with classical and popular elements, Native American music that is juxtaposed with Westem influences, Ballet music that will be intended for intermediate/advanced technique classes and listening pleasure. In reference to the ballet compact disc, Mr. Winesberry wishes to entitle it Diaries of a Ballet Accompanist. This title is intended to suggest Mr. Winesberry's series of various journeys in leaming and later mastering the art of ballet accompanying from the beginning of his employment in 1993 to present in the Department of Dance at The University of Iowa. Alicia Brown, Associate Emeritus Professor, and Abby Sesay, an accomplished ballerina within the university community will assist in the project.TekWinesberry Info
